DEI Panel Recap: “Belonging, Bravery, and Breaking Barriers”

This month, we had the incredible opportunity to gather for a powerful DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion – and Accessibility) panel featuring local changemakers committed to building spaces where everyone can feel seen, heard, and valued.
Our panelists included:
Matt Hedding-Hess from Rise & Thrive Wellness,
Jolene Booth from Sweet Darren’t Bakery and Ice Cream Shop,
Kerrie Blanton and Kayla Love from Clove Alliance,
Anne King from ProjectSun.
Together, they led an authentic, heartfelt, and thought-provoking conversation on what DEI truly means — and why the work matters now more than ever.
Key Takeaways:
DEI is not a buzzword — it's about belonging. The term “DEI” has been misunderstood and politicized, but at its core, it’s about creating brave and safe spaces where people feel like they belong.
It goes beyond race and gender. DEI encompasses so much more than visible identities.
Don’t forget the A: Accessibility. Accessibility is often left out of the conversation, but it is a vital part of inclusion. True equity considers what people need to fully participate, not just what we can see on the surface.
There’s no finish line. DEI work is never “done.” It evolves with our communities and requires ongoing effort, unlearning, and reflection. As Anne King shared, “Mental health is physical health” — and caring for one another starts with understanding and empathy.
We are all better together. The collective power of community was clear throughout the discussion. As each panelist shared their stories and insights, the message was clear: when we invest in each other, we all rise.
Clove Alliance also highlighted their Lunch and Learn events hosted by their DEI committee — a fantastic opportunity to keep the conversation going and grow in community.
