On Tuesday, Nov. 10, Kankakee Community College will commemorate Veterans Day with a reception and recognition ceremony.
The day will begin with a reception from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the KCC Cavalier Room, on the first floor near the College Center. A ceremony honoring veterans will be at 1 p.m. in the KCC Auditorium, Room L110. The public is invited.
Posting of the colors will be from the Marine Corps League Detachment 1253. Featured speaker will be Dan Horton, a Vietnam veteran.
“This year, we are honored to welcome Dan Horton as our guest speaker. Dan is an Air Force veteran, chaplain, and an active member of our community who has been involved with Uplifted Care's veterans’ services,” said Kendra Souligne, KCC director of financial aid & student engagement. “He recently experienced a trip on Honor Flight Chicago, and we are truly looking forward to hearing him share his story and experiences.”
Horton served in the U.S. Air Force from May 1973 to May 1977. He was a law enforcement specialist, patrol/narcotic detector dog handler, and a K-9 Squad leader during a portion of his service. Horton’s military working dogs were Bullet, Duke and Fury. While in the Air Force, Horton earned the National Defense Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Expert Marksman Ribbon for rifle/pistol, and the Airfare Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster.
“KCC is proud to serve and provide an education for students who have served our country,” added Megan Ponton, assistant director of financial aid & veteran services. “We are committed to helping veterans as they return to college life.”
The KCC Veterans Association is open to KCC students and staff who are military veterans, members of the military community, and supporters. It is an approved chapter of Student Veterans of America and SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society.
